Transmission Repair & Rebuilding

Transmission Services in McMinnville, TN

When something goes wrong with your transmission, you need more than a guess about what it might cost to fix. You need someone who understands how the transmission works, how it interacts with the rest of the vehicle, and which repairs actually address the problem.

At McMinnville Transmission, the person discussing your transmission problem may also be the person who rebuilds it. Owner Bo McCracken personally handles diagnostics and in-house transmission rebuilding. This is the work his father, Chuck, taught him, and it remains the center of the family business today. Our family's transmission history reaches back to Charlie Cooper and Chuck McCracken in Smithville in 1976. Chuck moved the shop to McMinnville in 1979. Today, Bo works alongside his cousin Jeff Kemper and nephew Seth Cantrell, while Connie McCracken helps customers at the front office. The people who know the work are part of the everyday conversation, from the first call through the repair.

Hanging a transmission sign on the wall at McMinnville Transmission

From older domestic cars and work trucks to many newer Asian vehicles, we've seen how transmission design has changed. The goal hasn't: understand what failed before deciding what to repair. Call (931) 473-5302 to talk about your vehicle and the symptoms you're experiencing.

Transmission Diagnosis Comes First

A vehicle that slips, shifts hard, shudders, delays going into gear, makes noise, or won't move may have a transmission problem. But those symptoms can also involve sensors, solenoids, electrical controls, engine performance, fluid loss, or connected drivetrain components.

Chuck's advice to Bo was simple: "Don't tell somebody they need a transmission unless you're sure they need a transmission." That is why we begin by learning what the vehicle is doing and working toward the cause. Our Transmission Diagnostics service covers the broader diagnostic process, while Transmission Electrical & Solenoid Diagnostics focuses on problems involving electronic transmission controls.

Transmission Repair, Rebuilding, and Replacement

Transmission Repair

Some transmission problems can be addressed without replacing or rebuilding the entire unit. The right approach depends on what testing and inspection reveal. We explain the findings and the repair options that apply to your vehicle.

Transmission Rebuilding

Rebuilding is a major part of what we do. When a transmission needs to come apart, Bo remains personally involved in the in-house work. Internal components are inspected, and worn or damaged parts are addressed as part of the rebuild. Read more about Transmission Rebuilding and what makes it different from simply installing another transmission.

Transmission Replacement

Sometimes replacement is the appropriate route. That decision depends on the vehicle, the damage, and the options available. Our Transmission Replacement page explains this alternative without assuming every vehicle needs a new unit.

Types of Transmissions We Work On

Automatic Transmission Repair

Conventional automatic transmissions use hydraulic and mechanical components alongside increasingly complex electronic controls. Newer six-speed, eight-speed, and ten-speed designs may behave differently from older three-speed and four-speed units, and the right diagnosis depends on the transmission in front of us. We work on many automatic applications, including newer designs where appropriate. Explore Automatic Transmission Repair.

Manual Transmission & Clutch Repair

Manual transmissions have their own wear patterns and symptoms. Difficulty selecting gears, grinding, clutch slipping, and engagement problems may point to the clutch, gearbox, or related components. We handle appropriate manual transmission and clutch work. Learn more about Manual Transmission & Clutch Repair.

CVT Transmission Repair

Continuously variable transmissions, or CVTs, operate differently from conventional stepped automatics. Hesitation, unusual engine speed, noise, or shuddering needs to be evaluated with that design in mind. We work on certain CVT applications, including some Asian vehicles, but repair options vary. See CVT Transmission Repair and call to confirm your vehicle.

Transmission Fluid, Leaks, and Converter Problems

Transmission Fluid Service

Fluid condition and service requirements depend on the transmission and manufacturer guidance. Our shop performs appropriate pan-drop fluid service, with filter and gasket work where applicable. We do not perform machine transmission flushes. Learn about Transmission Fluid Service.

Transmission Leak Repair

Fluid beneath a vehicle does not identify the leak source by itself. Seals, gaskets, lines, and other components may need inspection. Transmission Leak Repair begins with locating the problem before deciding what needs to be fixed.

Torque Converter Problems & Replacement

A torque converter is part of many automatic transmission systems and can be involved in shuddering or other drivability complaints. We diagnose relevant symptoms and replace torque converters when appropriate; we do not rebuild converters in-house. Read about Torque Converter Problems & Replacement.

Four-Wheel Drive and Related Drivetrain Work

Transmission concerns can overlap with the components that send power to the wheels. We also provide related services, including Transfer Case Repair, Rebuild & Replacement for appropriate four-wheel-drive applications, Differential & Rear-End Repair, CV Axles & CV Joints, and U-Joints & Driveline Repair.

A clunk, vibration, clicking noise, or unusual driving behavior is not always caused by the transmission itself. Looking at the whole drivetrain helps identify which component needs attention.

Vehicle Models and Transmission Identification

Most customers know their vehicle by its make and model, but transmission specialists often identify the unit by its specific transmission family or code. Understanding both is important because the same vehicle model can use different transmissions depending on its model year, engine, drivetrain, and trim level. At McMinnville Transmission, identifying the correct transmission helps the team evaluate shifting concerns, understand the vehicle's design, and determine which diagnostic and repair options may be appropriate.

Ford F-150, Ranger, Mustang, and Other Ford Transmissions

Ford vehicles use several different transmission designs, including the 6R80 six-speed automatic and 10R80 ten-speed automatic transmission families found in certain Ford F-150 applications. The 10R80 is also used in select Ford Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, and other Ford models. Knowing the specific transmission code helps narrow down potential concerns involving hard shifting, delayed engagement, electronic controls, and internal transmission components. Because transmission configurations vary by model and year, the team evaluates each vehicle individually before discussing available repair options.

Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and GM Transmissions

Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups have used several different automatic transmissions over the years, including six-speed, eight-speed, and ten-speed designs. Common examples include the 6L80, 8L90, and 10L80 transmission families, depending on the vehicle's configuration. Although these trucks may have similar names and appearances, their transmission systems can differ significantly. Identifying the correct unit allows the team to better understand potential transmission problems and determine whether diagnostics, a targeted repair, or more extensive transmission work may be necessary.

Ram Trucks and Dodge Transmission Applications

Ram trucks are another example of why accurate transmission identification matters. Depending on the model year, engine, and configuration, certain Ram vehicles have used transmissions such as the 68RFE six-speed automatic, Aisin AS69RC, and ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic. A Ram 1500 may have very different transmission components and service requirements than a heavy-duty Ram 2500 or 3500. McMinnville Transmission also discusses appropriate Dodge vehicle applications based on the specific model and transmission installed, helping customers understand which services may be available for their vehicle.

Nissan CVT Transmissions and Other Asian Vehicles

Many Asian vehicles use transmission designs that require specific diagnostic knowledge and repair considerations. Certain Nissan Altima, Rogue, Sentra, and Versa models use Jatco continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), including transmission families identified by codes such as JF011E (RE0F10A), JF015E (RE0F11A), and JF016E (RE0F10D). These codes represent different CVT designs rather than interchangeable names for the same transmission.

McMinnville Transmission also discusses transmission concerns involving select Honda Accord and Civic, Mazda3 and CX-5, and Mitsubishi Lancer and Outlander applications. Because transmission systems vary considerably between model years and configurations, the shop evaluates each vehicle's information before confirming whether it is an application the team can service.

Important: These vehicle models and transmission codes are examples of transmission families found in the automotive market, not a guarantee that McMinnville Transmission services every listed application. When contacting the shop, provide your vehicle's year, make, model, engine if known, and transmission code if available so the team can confirm whether your vehicle falls within its capabilities.

Domestic and Asian Transmission Repair in McMinnville, TN

McMinnville Transmission has longstanding experience working with domestic vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, and Ram cars and trucks. The shop also services many Asian vehicle applications, including select Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi models. This experience allows the team to discuss a variety of transmission concerns, from shifting problems in work trucks and pickups to automatic transmission issues in everyday passenger vehicles and SUVs.

Different manufacturers use different transmission systems, and even vehicles from the same brand may have significantly different designs depending on the year, engine, and trim level. A Ford work truck, Chevrolet Silverado, Ram pickup, and Nissan passenger vehicle may each require a different approach to transmission diagnostics and repair. Rather than assuming that every transmission can be serviced in the same way, McMinnville Transmission evaluates each application individually.

We do not service European vehicles or claim to repair every transmission produced by the manufacturers listed above. If you're experiencing a transmission problem, contact Bo and the team with your vehicle's year, make, model, and symptoms to determine whether the shop can assist.

Three Generations of Transmission Knowledge and Hands-On Experience

The experience behind McMinnville Transmission goes back generations. Bo grew up learning about transmission repair from his father, Chuck, and officially joined the family business in 1997. When Chuck became seriously ill in 2002, Bo took responsibility for the shop's daily operations while continuing to develop his skills as a transmission rebuilder. During those difficult years, Bo sometimes called his father at the hospital for guidance when faced with a challenging transmission problem. Although Chuck passed away in 2004, his commitment to understanding the actual cause of a problem before recommending major repairs continues to influence the shop's approach today.

That philosophy remains especially important when customers are told they may have a transmission problem. Not every slip, shudder, hesitation, or hard shift means a complete transmission rebuild is necessary. Accurate diagnostics help distinguish between internal transmission damage, electrical faults, worn components, and other vehicle problems that may produce similar symptoms. Bo continues to work directly on transmissions and speak with customers, helping them understand what the team discovers and why a particular repair may be recommended.

Bo's cousin, Jeff Kemper, brings more than 20 years of experience involving transmission removal, installation, vehicle scanning, and road testing. His work includes checking vehicle performance following transmission repairs and helping ensure concerns are properly evaluated before a vehicle is returned to its owner. Meanwhile, Bo's nephew, Seth Cantrell, is learning to rebuild newer six-speed, eight-speed, and ten-speed transmissions under Bo's guidance, carrying the family's technical knowledge into another generation.

The family connection extends beyond the repair bays. Connie McCracken joined the front office following Chuck's passing and remains a familiar voice for customers who call or visit the shop. She helps answer questions, welcome customers, and connect them with the family members performing the work. Bo's wife, Amanda, also helps at McMinnville Transmission, contributing to the daily operations of the family business.

Together, Bo, Connie, Jeff, Seth, and Amanda represent the people behind McMinnville Transmission. Their involvement reflects the shop's commitment to maintaining personal relationships with customers while continuing to adapt to modern transmission technology.
