Signs Your Transmission Needs Attention
Slipping or Unexpected Engine Speed
The engine may rev without the vehicle accelerating as expected, or the transmission may seem to lose its hold on a gear.
Hard or Delayed Shifts
You might feel a jolt between gears or notice a pause when selecting drive or reverse. Some problems appear only after the vehicle warms up.
Shuddering, Vibration, or New Noises
A shudder during acceleration, an unfamiliar whine, or a new vibration may come from the transmission or another drivetrain component.
Leaks, Warning Lights, or No Movement
Fluid beneath the vehicle, a warning light, or a vehicle that struggles to move deserves attention. If the vehicle feels unsafe, stop driving and call to discuss the next step.
Not every symptom means the transmission needs rebuilding. Some electrical and engine problems can feel like transmission trouble.
Finding the Cause Before Recommending Repairs
Chuck McCracken taught Bo something that still guides the shop: "Don't tell somebody they need a transmission unless you're sure they need a transmission."
Bo starts by listening to what the driver has noticed. Depending on the symptoms, the team may check for leaks, review available diagnostic information, evaluate shifting behavior, and investigate electrical or mechanical faults. A sensor, solenoid, or another component may be involved.

Repair, Rebuild, or Replacement?
The right recommendation depends on what failed, the condition of the transmission, and what makes sense for your vehicle. We don't treat every transmission problem as the same job.
Transmission Repair
Some problems can be addressed without rebuilding the entire transmission. A leak, a component fault, or an electrical problem may call for a more focused repair.
Transmission Rebuilding
When internal wear or damage makes rebuilding necessary, Bo is involved in the work performed here at the shop. The transmission is disassembled and inspected so damaged or worn components can be addressed. Read more about Transmission Rebuilding.
Transmission Replacement
Sometimes replacing the transmission is the appropriate option. Learn more about Transmission Replacement and call us to discuss your particular vehicle.
Automatic, Manual, and CVT Transmissions
Automatic transmissions have changed considerably over the years. Modern vehicles may use electronic controls, sensors, solenoids, and six-, eight-, or ten-speed designs. We work on many conventional automatic transmissions, including newer applications where appropriate. Learn more about Automatic Transmission Repair.
We also work on manual transmissions and clutches, as well as certain continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). The design and repair options vary by vehicle, so call with your year, make, and model. You can read more about Manual Transmission & Clutch Repair and CVT Transmission Repair.
We handle vehicle-appropriate Transmission Fluid Service, including pan-drop fluid, filter, and gasket service where applicable. We do not perform machine transmission flushes. We also diagnose Transmission Leak Repair needs and can discuss related drivetrain work, such as torque converter replacement, transfer cases, differentials, CV axles, and U-joints.
Domestic and Asian Vehicles We Work On
Our shop has a long history with domestic cars and trucks, including Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Dodge, and Ram. We also work on many Asian vehicles, including Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. Different makes, model years, and transmissions require different equipment, parts, and repair approaches.
We don't claim to work on every vehicle in those groups, and we do not service European vehicles. When you call, tell us the year, make, model, and what you've noticed so we can confirm whether we work on that transmission.
A Family Shop With Hands-On Experience
The transmission work in our family goes back to Charlie Cooper and Chuck McCracken in Smithville in 1976. Chuck moved the business to McMinnville in 1979. Bo joined in 1997, and when Chuck became seriously ill in 2002, Bo took responsibility for keeping the shop running.
Today, Connie welcomes people in the office, Bo handles diagnostics and rebuilding, his cousin Jeff Kemper works on removal, installation, and testing, and Bo's nephew Seth Cantrell is learning newer transmission designs. You can learn more about the family on our About Us / Our Story page.
After installation, the team road-tests the vehicle and checks for leaks. Sometimes additional checks are needed before a vehicle is ready to leave. Bo may also show customers worn or damaged parts so they can see what failed.
