Transmission Repair & Rebuilding
in McMinnville, TN

Slipping, shifting hard, hesitating when you put your vehicle in gear, or not moving at all? Before anyone tells you that you need a new transmission, somebody needs to figure out what’s actually wrong.

That’s what we do at McMinnville Transmission. Bo McCracken and his crew diagnose, repair, replace, and rebuild transmissions right here at our shop on South Chancery Street. Our family’s transmission work began in Smithville in 1976, and we’ve been serving McMinnville since 1979.

We believe in finding the problem before recommending the repair.

Having Transmission Trouble?

A slipping transmission doesn't always need the same repair as a vehicle that won't shift out of gear. Hard shifts, delayed engagement, shuddering, leaks, and unusual noises can have different causes. Even an engine misfire can feel like a transmission problem.

Bo's father, Chuck, taught him not to tell somebody they need a transmission unless he's sure. That still matters here. We start by looking for the cause and explaining what we find, rather than assuming every symptom means a complete rebuild.

If you're not sure what's wrong, read about our Transmission Diagnostics. For an overview of repair options, visit Transmission Repair.

Our story

A Family Transmission Shop Since 1976

The family business began in Smithville in 1976, when Charlie Cooper and his stepson Chuck McCracken opened a transmission shop. Chuck moved the business to McMinnville in 1979. Bo grew up around the shop and joined in 1997.

When Chuck became seriously ill in 2002, Bo took responsibility for the daily work, sometimes calling his dad at the hospital to talk through a difficult transmission problem. Chuck passed away in 2004. Bo continues the family work today, with the next generation learning beside him.

Today, the team works on modern domestic and many Asian transmissions, while keeping the family's focus on understanding the problem before recommending major work.

You can read more about Chuck, Bo, and the family on our About Us / Our Story page.

Meet the People Working on Your Vehicle

Connie McCracken, Bo's mother, has welcomed customers in the front office since 2004. She answers the phone, talks with visitors, and helps people feel heard.

Bo handles diagnostics, rebuilds, and customer conversations. His cousin Jeff Kemper has been with the shop for more than 20 years, working on transmission removal and installation, testing, and other repair steps. Bo's nephew Seth Cantrell is learning to rebuild newer six-, eight-, and ten-speed transmissions under his guidance.

Bo sometimes shows customers the worn or broken parts so they can understand what failed. After installation, the shop road-tests the vehicle and checks for leaks, with additional checks when needed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive with a slipping transmission?

A slipping transmission may get worse while you're driving, and continuing to drive could cause more damage. If the vehicle is struggling to move, shifting unpredictably, or feels unsafe, stop driving it. Call the shop to describe the symptoms and discuss the next step.

Do you diagnose the problem before recommending a rebuild or replacement?

Yes. Bo's approach is to identify the cause before recommending major transmission work. Some symptoms come from electrical faults, solenoids, or other problems that don't require a complete rebuild.

The repair recommendation depends on what the diagnosis shows.

What vehicles does McMinnville Transmission work on?

We work on many domestic vehicles, including Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Dodge, and Ram, and many Asian vehicles, including Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. We do not service European vehicles.
