At McMinnville Transmission, we understand how important dependable work vehicles are to the people who rely on them every day. Our family-owned shop has served McMinnville since 1979, providing transmission diagnostics, repairs, and in-house rebuilding for many domestic trucks and other qualifying vehicles.
Whether you operate one work truck or manage several vehicles, our goal is to help identify the problem, explain the repair options, and give you the information you need to plan.
Call (931) 473-5302 to discuss your work truck's transmission symptoms and service needs.
Transmission Problems Can Disrupt Your Entire Workday
A transmission that slips, shifts hard, hesitates when pulling away, or overheats under load can interfere with a truck's ability to do its job.
Sometimes the symptoms appear gradually. A truck may begin shifting differently while hauling tools or equipment, then develop more noticeable problems during everyday driving. Other times, a warning light or sudden loss of a gear brings work to a stop.
Common concerns include:
- Slipping or delayed engagement when accelerating
- Harsh or irregular shifts under load
- Transmission fluid leaks
- Unusual noises or vibration
- Transmission warning lights or trouble codes
- Overheating or changes in shifting behavior while towing
These symptoms do not all point to the same repair. A fluid leak, electronic control fault, torque converter concern, or internal transmission problem can require very different work.
Our Transmission Diagnostics service focuses on identifying the cause before recommending a repair.
Transmission Repair for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, and Ram Work Trucks
McMinnville Transmission works on many domestic pickups commonly used by contractors and local businesses.
Depending on the year, drivetrain, and transmission design, qualifying vehicles may include:
- Ford: F-150, Ranger, and certain other supported Ford trucks
- Chevrolet: Silverado pickups and other qualifying Chevrolet work vehicles
- GMC: Sierra pickups and supported GMC truck models
- Dodge and Ram: Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks with supported transmissions
Our experience includes transmission families such as Ford's 6R80 and 10R80, GM's 6L80, 8L90, and 10L80, and certain Ram automatic transmissions.
These examples do not mean that every model year, transmission configuration, or commercial vehicle is supported. We do not advertise service for every heavy-duty commercial truck.
Please call with your truck's year, make, model, transmission information if known, and how it is used so we can confirm whether the work falls within our service scope.
Towing, Hauling, and Daily Work Put Demands on a Transmission
Work trucks often operate under conditions that differ from ordinary passenger vehicles. Carrying equipment, pulling trailers, making frequent stops, and working in hot weather can place additional demands on the transmission.
Heat is particularly important. Automatic transmissions rely on transmission fluid for hydraulic operation, lubrication, and heat management. Excessive temperatures can accelerate fluid deterioration and contribute to component wear.
Not every transmission problem is caused by towing or heavy loads. However, knowing how the truck is used helps put its symptoms into context.
When you call, let us know whether the truck regularly tows a trailer, carries heavy tools or materials, or develops symptoms primarily while loaded.
Repair, Rebuild, or Replacement: Finding the Right Approach
A work truck with a shifting problem does not automatically need a complete transmission replacement.
Depending on the diagnosis, the appropriate work may involve a targeted repair, an electrical or control-related concern, or a more extensive internal transmission repair.
When a transmission has significant internal damage, rebuilding may be an option. Bo McCracken personally rebuilds transmissions in-house, allowing the shop to maintain direct involvement in the rebuilding process.
You can learn more about the different repair paths on our Automatic Transmission Repair, Transmission Rebuilding, and Transmission Replacement pages.
The recommendation should depend on the transmission's condition, the vehicle, and the findings from diagnosis.
Transmission Fluid Service for Working Vehicles
Regular maintenance can be particularly important for trucks that spend much of their time towing, hauling, or operating under demanding conditions.
McMinnville Transmission provides qualifying transmission fluid services, including pan-drop fluid, filter, and gasket service where appropriate for the transmission design.
We do not perform machine transmission flushes.
The correct maintenance interval depends on the manufacturer's recommendations, the transmission, and the truck's operating conditions. A fluid service cannot reverse internal mechanical damage, but appropriate maintenance can be part of caring for a working vehicle.

Repair Planning for Business Owners and Fleet Managers
If you manage several vehicles, you need practical information about the problem and the available repair options.
When contacting the shop, it helps to have the truck's year, make, model, mileage, symptoms, and any previous transmission repair history. If multiple vehicles need attention, explain the situation so the shop can discuss what it may be able to accommodate.
Repair timing depends on the diagnosis, parts availability, existing workload, and the amount of work required. A minor repair and a complete transmission rebuild do not follow the same schedule.
We do not promise guaranteed priority service or fixed turnaround times. Instead, we encourage customers to discuss scheduling and expectations directly with the shop before making business arrangements around a repair.
A Family Transmission Shop That Understands the Value of Doing the Job Right
McMinnville Transmission began with Chuck McCracken, who opened his transmission shop in Smithville in 1976 before moving the business to McMinnville in 1979.
His son Bo joined the business in 1997 and took over daily operations in 2002. Today, Bo continues to diagnose and rebuild transmissions, working alongside family members and experienced team members.
Chuck taught Bo a principle that still matters: “Don't tell somebody they need a transmission unless you're sure they need a transmission.”
For someone whose income depends on a truck, that philosophy matters. An unnecessary major repair can be costly, while overlooking a serious transmission problem can lead to more downtime.
The goal is to understand what's wrong and discuss the repair that fits the actual problem.
