Our family-owned transmission shop has served McMinnville, Tennessee, since 1979. Owner Bo McCracken personally diagnoses and rebuilds transmissions, continuing the approach his father, Chuck McCracken, taught him: “Don't tell somebody they need a transmission unless you're sure they need a transmission.”
Below are answers to common questions about transmission symptoms, diagnosis, repair options, maintenance, and warranties.
Transmission Symptoms & Warning Signs
How do I know if my transmission needs repair?
Common warning signs include slipping between gears, delayed engagement, hard shifting, unusual noises, fluid leaks, and transmission warning lights. However, these symptoms can have different causes, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems.
The symptoms alone cannot confirm which repair is needed. Our Transmission Repair page explains common problems and possible repair approaches.
Why does my transmission shift hard or jerk between gears?
Hard shifting may involve transmission fluid pressure, electronic controls, solenoids, valve body operation, or internal wear. Engine-related problems and other vehicle conditions can sometimes affect how shifting feels, too.
A proper evaluation helps determine whether the issue is inside the transmission or related to another system. Learn more about Transmission Diagnostics.
What does it mean when my transmission slips?
Transmission slipping generally describes a situation in which engine speed rises without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed, or the transmission does not maintain the expected gear engagement.
Low fluid, hydraulic problems, worn internal components, and certain control faults may contribute. Because continued slipping can generate heat and worsen damage, it is worth addressing promptly. See our Automatic Transmission Repair service.
Can I keep driving if my transmission is slipping?
Continuing to drive a slipping transmission can increase heat and internal damage. The risk depends on the cause and severity, which cannot be determined from symptoms alone.
If the vehicle is slipping severely, losing drive, or behaving unpredictably, avoid continued driving and contact a repair professional. Our Transmission Diagnostics page explains why identifying the problem early matters.
Transmission Diagnosis & Repair Decisions
Does a check engine light mean my transmission is failing?
No. A check engine light can indicate many vehicle problems, including engine, emissions, and transmission-related faults.
Even a transmission-specific trouble code does not necessarily mean the transmission requires rebuilding. Electrical circuits, sensors, solenoids, hydraulic performance, and mechanical operation may need to be considered. Read about Transmission Electrical & Solenoid Diagnostics.
What happens before you recommend a transmission repair?
The appropriate evaluation depends on the symptoms and vehicle. Diagnostic information, operating behavior, and relevant mechanical or electrical conditions help determine what may be wrong.
A repair recommendation should be based on the identified problem rather than assuming every shifting concern requires a complete transmission. Our Transmission Diagnostics page explains the purpose of that process.
Do you charge for transmission diagnostics?
Diagnostic fees depend on the evaluation required. We do not advertise free transmission diagnostics, and customers should not assume that an inspection or diagnostic procedure has no charge.
Call (931) 473-5302 to discuss your vehicle's symptoms and ask about the applicable diagnostic process and fees. You can also find our location on Contact & Directions.
How much does transmission repair cost?
Transmission repair costs vary significantly based on the vehicle, transmission design, cause of the problem, parts required, and amount of labor involved.
A targeted electrical or leak repair is different from an internal rebuild or replacement. An accurate estimate depends on understanding the problem and proposed work. Explore the possibilities on our Transmission Repair page.
Rebuilding vs. Replacing a Transmission
Is it better to rebuild or replace a transmission?
Neither option is automatically best for every vehicle. The decision depends on the condition of the existing transmission, the extent of damage, parts availability, and the available replacement options.
McMinnville Transmission rebuilds qualifying transmissions in-house. Learn more about Transmission Rebuilding and Transmission Replacement.
Does McMinnville Transmission rebuild transmissions in-house?
Yes. Owner Bo McCracken personally diagnoses and rebuilds transmissions in-house. That hands-on work is an important part of the family business.
Not every transmission or vehicle is supported, so customers should confirm service availability for their specific model. Read more about our Transmission Rebuilding service.
How long does a transmission rebuild take?
The time required depends on the transmission, extent of damage, parts availability, and current shop workload.
We do not promise a universal turnaround time because every repair is different. Contact the shop to discuss scheduling and expectations for your vehicle. Our Transmission Rebuilding page explains what rebuilding involves.
Transmission Maintenance & Fluid Service
Should I get a transmission flush or fluid change?
The correct maintenance approach depends on the transmission design, manufacturer recommendations, fluid condition, and vehicle history.
McMinnville Transmission provides qualifying pan-drop fluid, filter, and gasket services where appropriate. We do not perform machine transmission flushes. Visit Transmission Fluid Service for details.
Can changing transmission fluid fix slipping or hard shifting?
A fluid service may address certain maintenance-related concerns, but it cannot repair worn internal clutches, damaged components, or electrical faults.
If the transmission is already slipping or shifting abnormally, identifying the cause is important before assuming a fluid change will solve it. Learn more about Transmission Diagnostics.
Warranty, Vehicles & Scheduling
Does McMinnville Transmission offer a warranty?
A 24-month/24,000-mile warranty is available on qualifying transmission work, subject to the written terms issued for the specific repair.
Not every service or replacement unit receives identical coverage. Visit our Transmission Warranty page and ask the shop about eligibility before approving work.
What vehicle makes do you service?
McMinnville Transmission works on many domestic vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, and Ram, along with many Asian vehicles such as Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi.
Service availability depends on the year, model, and transmission design. We do not service European vehicles. Call with your vehicle information so we can confirm whether the work is within our scope. Explore our Transmission Services.
Do you work on trucks used for towing or business?
Yes. We handle qualifying transmission diagnostics and repairs for many domestic pickups and work trucks. Towing, hauling, and demanding daily use can affect how a transmission operates, so let us know how the truck is used.
See our Fleet & Work Truck Transmission Repair page for more information.
