Transmission Repair & Rebuilding

Meet the Family Behind McMinnville Transmission

McMinnville Transmission is a family-owned transmission repair and rebuilding shop with roots in Smithville, Tennessee, dating back to 1976.

The Shop Began in Smithville

The McCracken family's transmission history began in Smithville in 1976, when Charlie Cooper and his stepson, Chuck McCracken, opened a transmission shop together.

Charlie had raised Chuck and taught him the trade. They worked side by side, taking automatic transmissions apart, figuring out what had failed, and rebuilding them for the cars and trucks people drove every day.

Most automatic transmissions relied on mechanical and hydraulic systems. There weren't computer-controlled shift strategies, complicated electronic solenoids, or the programming requirements that come with today's vehicles.

Connie remembers that a transmission rebuild could cost around $140 in those early days! The shop also kept rebuilt transmissions ready to install, so some customers didn't have to wait for a unit to be rebuilt from the beginning.

The Move to McMinnville

In 1979, Chuck moved the family transmission repair business from Smithville to McMinnville, Tennessee. Around that same time, Charlie retired, leaving Chuck responsible for carrying the business forward. Chuck established McMinnville Transmission on South Chancery Street, where the shop continues to operate today. It was also a memorable year for the family, as Chuck and his wife, Connie, welcomed their son, Bo. What began as a new chapter for the family would become the foundation of a lasting automotive repair business in McMinnville.

Over the following years, Chuck built a reputation as a knowledgeable and straightforward transmission specialist, focusing primarily on domestic vehicles, including Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, and Dodge cars and trucks. He took pride in knowing his trade and was never afraid to be upfront about the types of vehicles he preferred to service. Connie still laughs when she remembers one of his favorite responses. If someone asked about a vehicle make he wasn't interested in working on, Chuck would simply tell them he didn't work on something he couldn't pronounce. His direct personality sometimes caught people off guard, but those who got to know him understood there was much more to Chuck than his serious exterior. Connie remembers that underneath his stern demeanor, he was truly a teddy bear.

For Chuck, running a successful transmission repair shop was about more than fixing vehicles. He believed in honest recommendations, quality workmanship, fair treatment, and earning the trust of customers who depended on McMinnville Transmission to keep their vehicles on the road. Those values became part of the business's foundation, and he wanted to pass them down to the next generation. His advice to Bo captured that philosophy perfectly: "Don't tell somebody they need a transmission unless you're sure they need a transmission."

Bo Grew Up in the Shop

By the time Bo was five or six, McMinnville Transmission was already one of his favorite places to be.

He spent time there during summers and school breaks, watching his dad work, playing around the parking lot, and learning what a transmission shop looked and sounded like long before he understood everything happening inside one. Chuck knew how demanding the trade could be and encouraged Bo to go to college instead.

Bo tried other work, including jobs at a factory and a furniture store. In 1997, Bo officially left college and began working at McMinnville Transmission. Chuck was still running the business, and Bo had plenty to learn. He was learning how to remove and install transmissions, recognize problems, understand the internal parts, and put the pieces back together.

He was also learning how his dad dealt with customers, made decisions, and stood behind the work.

Bo Takes Over in 2002

In 2002, Chuck became seriously ill, marking a difficult turning point for both the family and McMinnville Transmission. With his father no longer able to be at the shop every day, Bo stepped up to keep the family transmission repair business running while learning the technical skills of transmission rebuilding and the responsibilities of managing an automotive repair shop. It was a challenging time, and Bo often worked late into the evenings, diagnosing transmission problems, completing rebuilds, and learning to handle situations that once would have fallen to his father.

Even from the hospital, Chuck kept sharing his knowledge and experience with his son. Bo remembers calling his dad whenever he encountered a particularly difficult transmission repair, and Chuck would patiently talk him through what to inspect and how to approach the problem. Those conversations became an important part of Bo's education and helped him develop the confidence and skills needed to carry the family business forward. When Chuck passed away in 2004, Bo had already spent two years taking on responsibilities much earlier than he had ever expected. Although the loss was deeply personal, the lessons Chuck taught him continued to shape Bo's approach to transmission repair and the future of McMinnville Transmission in McMinnville, Tennessee.

Bo Expands Transmission Rebuilding

Chuck's work focused mainly on domestic transmissions in Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, and Dodge vehicles.

More Asian vehicles were appearing on Tennessee roads. Automatic transmissions were becoming increasingly electronic. Manufacturers were introducing more gears, more sophisticated valve bodies, electronic controls, and new transmission designs. He expanded the business into many Asian vehicle makes, including Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi rebuilds. He also invested in diagnostic equipment, updated the shop, and continued learning the newer transmissions found in modern Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, Dodge, and Ram vehicles.

Today, McMinnville Transmission works on many domestic and Asian cars, trucks, and SUVs, with a strong focus on modern automatic transmission repair and rebuilding. That includes transmission families such as the GM 4L60E, 6L80, 6L90, and 8L90, along with newer ten-speed applications. The shop also works with Ford units such as the 6R80 and 10R80, Dodge and Ram transmissions such as the 66RFE and 68RFE, Allison applications, and a variety of Asian automatic and CVT transmissions.

Bo's Hands-On Approach

Bo remains hands-on with the daily operations at McMinnville Transmission, personally diagnosing transmission problems, rebuilding transmissions, and working directly with customers. He believes in taking the time to explain what is happening with a vehicle, sometimes even showing customers damaged components so they can better understand whether a transmission repair or complete rebuild is necessary. Not every symptom that feels like a transmission failure actually requires major transmission work. An engine misfire, electrical issue, or faulty solenoid can cause shifting problems that seem much more serious than they really are. That's why Bo focuses on accurate transmission diagnostics and identifying the source of the problem before recommending expensive repairs.

When a complete transmission rebuild is necessary, Bo believes in doing the job thoroughly rather than replacing a single failed component and overlooking potential problems elsewhere. At McMinnville Transmission, the rebuilding process involves carefully inspecting internal transmission components, evaluating wear and damage, and making the necessary repairs and updates to restore dependable performance. Once the rebuilt transmission is installed, the vehicle undergoes road testing and a thorough inspection for leaks or other concerns. The shop typically keeps the vehicle for an additional day to complete another inspection and test drive before returning it to the customer.

The goal is simple: identify the actual problem, recommend the right repair, and make sure the work is done correctly.

Connie Joins the Shop

Connie McCracken was part of the family behind McMinnville Transmission long before she joined the team.

As Chuck's wife and Bo and Tammy's mother, she had watched the business grow while raising their family. For years, Connie was a stay-at-home wife and mother. She also had a creative side and eventually operated a flower shop with her daughter, Tammy. When Chuck became seriously ill, the family spent so much time dealing with his hospitalization that Connie and Tammy eventually had to close the flower shop.

After Chuck passed away in 2004, Connie worked alongside Bo at McMinnville Transmission. Bo was carrying the responsibility of running his father's business, and Connie became the familiar face welcoming people through the front door. If you've called McMinnville Transmission or stopped by the office, there's a good chance you've talked with her. Connie answers the phone, greets customers, helps with office work, and makes sure people feel heard. She knows that nobody is particularly happy to discover their vehicle may need major transmission repair.

Connie enjoys talking with customers, and some stop by just to visit. Bo says his mom likes to talk a lot. Connie would probably agree. Around the office, you'll find old photographs, collectibles, and little pieces of the family's history.

Even the old sign from Connie's flower shop found its way into the transmission shop.

She joined the business in 2004, after Chuck passed away, and has worked alongside Bo ever since. She answers calls, welcomes customers, helps keep the office running, and makes sure people have a chance to ask questions. And if Bo spends 45 minutes talking with a customer when he ought to be back working on a transmission, Connie probably knows about it.

Jeff Kemper | Transmission Technician

Jeff is Bo's cousin and has worked at McMinnville Transmission for more than 20 years.

That includes removing and installing transmissions, scanning and test-driving vehicles, checking for leaks, and preparing vehicles for the next part of the job.

Seth Cantrell | The Next Generation of Transmission Builders

Seth is Bo's nephew, the son of Bo's sister Tammy.

When Seth was considering his future, the family encouraged him to get some real-world experience at the transmission shop before deciding what he wanted to do. Today, Seth is learning to rebuild modern six-speed, eight-speed, and ten-speed transmissions under Bo's guidance.

A Family Connected by the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry has always been an important part of the family, extending beyond McMinnville Transmission. Bo's older sister, Tammy, and her husband also work in the automotive world as the owners of Cantrell's Detail Shop in Smithville, Tennessee. Their business specializes in professional vehicle cleaning and detailing, continuing the family's connection to automotive care in Middle Tennessee.

Bo's wife, Amanda, is another important part of his life and helps support the family business. Together, they continue building on the foundation established by the generations before them.

Remembering Teddy, the Shop's Four-Legged Friend

For years, McMinnville Transmission had a familiar face greeting customers, and he wasn't a technician. Teddy, Bo's beloved golden retriever, became a special part of the shop's everyday life. Customers grew so fond of him that some would stop by looking for Teddy before even mentioning why they had brought their vehicles in. He brought a little extra personality and warmth to the family-owned transmission shop, making visits memorable for customers and employees alike.

Connie still remembers one customer who loved Teddy so much that she had him sitting in her car. Stories like that remind us of the relationships built at McMinnville Transmission over the years. The shop has always been about more than transmission repairs. It's also about the people, conversations, and familiar faces that make a local business feel like part of the community.

Although Teddy has since passed away, he remains a treasured part of the family's memories. Today, Bo and Amanda have two golden retriever brothers named Taz and Toby. The younger dogs have plenty of energy and don't visit the shop as often as Teddy once did, but they bring just as much personality to the family.

Celebrating 50 Years of Family Transmission Repair

After decades of working on transmissions, serving customers, and passing knowledge from one generation to the next, McMinnville Transmission still reflects the values that built the family business. The automotive industry has changed significantly over the years, with increasingly complex transmissions, advanced diagnostic equipment, and new technologies transforming the way repairs are performed. Yet the importance of honest recommendations, quality workmanship, and fair treatment of customers remains the same.

Connie enjoys getting to know the people who are part of the shop today, and she sometimes wonders what Chuck would think if he could see how far the business has come. The transmissions are more complicated, the equipment has evolved, and now his grandson, Seth, is learning the trade and becoming part of the family's automotive legacy.

Reflecting on the responsibilities Bo has taken on and the business he continues to lead, Connie says, "He has filled some big shoes."

It's a simple statement that carries decades of family history, hard work, and pride. From one generation to the next, McMinnville Transmission has remained rooted in the belief that customers deserve straightforward answers, dependable transmission repairs, and people they can trust.
